PROPRIETARY Carpenter Lapelloy C Heat Treatments


  • Annealing: Heat to 1300/1350°F (704/732°C), 4 hours at heat and furnace or air cool. Hardness range will be Rc 29/31. Isothermal annealing is not practical because treating time exceeds 100 hours. Hardening: Heat to 1900°F (1038°C), and oil or air quench. For intricate shapes, marquench to 650°F (343°C), and air cool. Rockwell C hardness 50/55. The alloy should never be air cooled to the Ms temperature and quenched as severe cracking can result. During hardening, be certain that the part has cooled to a temperature below the Mf temperature (preferably room temperature) before tempering. Complete transformation to martensite is necessary to prevent nonuniform structures and hardness after tempering (i.e., mixtures of tempered and untempered martensite will result). Tempering: It is advisable to temper immediately after the alloy has reached room temperature after hardening treatments.
