PROPRIETARY CarTech 18Cr-2Ni-12Mn Stainless Heat Treatments

  • Annealing: Heat to 1038-1066ºC (1900-1950°F) and water quench, or rapidly cool as with other austenitic stainless steels.

    Hardening: Cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Can be hardened only by cold work. For hot working, heat uniformly to 1149-1204°C (2100-2200ºF). Preheating to an intermediate temperature is not required. For maximum corrosion resistance, annealing after hot working is required. For some applications, water quenching of small forgings from the hammer may be adequate and serve to eliminate the need for annealing.

    Hot working: Can be forged, hot-rolled, hot-headed and upset.

    Cold working: Can be cold formed by drawing, bending, upsetting and stamping.
