SAE 5749 Heat Treatments
- Hardened by heating to 1121°C ± 14°C (2050°F ± 25°F), holding 1 hour per 25 mm of maximum cross section but not less than 30 minutes, quenching in oil or quenching for 5-6 minutes in a salt bath maintained at 566°C ± 8°C (1050°F ± 15°F ), and cooling in air.
Stress relieve: Heating to 149°C ± 8°C (300°F ± 15°F ), holding at heat for 60 minutes ± 5, and cooling in air.
Cold treated: Cooling to -73°C ± 6°C (-100°F ± 10°F ), not less than 15 minutes, and warming in air.
Double tempered: 524°C ± 8°C (975°F ± 15°F), holding at heat for 2 hours ±15 minutes, cooling in air. Reheating to 524°C ± 8°C (975°F ± 15°F ), 2 hours ± 15 minutes, and cooling in air.
