AISI M-1 Heat Treatments
- Pre-heat at 732 - 843°C (1350 - 1550°F) then austenitize at either 1196°C (2185°F) in a salt bath or 1207°C (2205°F) in a controlled atmosphere furnace. Oil quench or quench in molten salts and air cool. When a salt quench is employed, its temperature shall be 566 - 635°C (1050 - 1175°F). Temper twice at 552°C (1025°F) for 2 hours each
- Preheated: 760-815°C; hardened and quenched: 1177-1232°C, cooling in air, oil, salt. Tempered: 550-566°C. Annealed: 830-870°C, maximum rate of cooling: 28°C/hour.
