SAE 4140 Mod Heat Treatments
- Production Castings and Specimens:
Normalized and Tempered:
Normalized: Heat to a selected temperature in the range of 899 to 927°C (1650 to 1700°F), in an atmosphere neutral to the specified carbon range, hold at heat for not less than one hour, and cool at a rate equivalent to that obtained in still air;
Tempered: When required, heat to a temperature not lower than 482°C (900°F);
Hardened and Tempered:
Hardened: Heat to 871 ±14°C (1600 ± 25°F), in an atmosphere neutral to the specified carbon range, hold at heat for not less than 30 minutes, and quench in oil or at a rate equivalent to oil quenching;
Tempered: Heat to a temperature not lower than 482°C (900°F), hold at heat for one hour per 25 mm of cross-section but not less than one hour, and cool in air
