SAE 4130 Mod Heat Treatments

  • Production Castings and Specimens:

    Normalized and tempered:
    Normalize: Heat to a temperature 927 to 954°C (1700 to 1750°F), in an atmosphere neutral to the specified carbon range, hold at heat for not less than one hour, and cool at a rate equivalent to that obtained in still air;
    Temper: When required, heat to a temperature not lower than 427°C (800°F);

    Hardened and tempered:
    Harden: Heat to 871 ± 14°C (1600 ± 25°F), in an atmosphere neutral to the specified carbon range, hold at heat for not less than 30 minutes, and quench in oil or at a rate equivalent to oil quenching;
    Temper: Double temper by heating to a temperature not lower than 427°C (800°F), holding at heat for 1 hour per 25 mm of cross section but not less than 1 hour, and cooling in air after each operation
