SAE 5900 Heat Treatments

  • Specimens after being treated as follows in a neutral atmosphere or neutral salt to minimize scale and prevent either carburization or decarburization:
    Preheat at 816°C ± 6°C (1500°F ± 10°F) for not less than 15 minutes.
Heat to 1149°C ± 14°C (2100°F ± 25°F), hold at heat for 7 to 10 minutes. Oil quench to room temperature or, preferably, quench into salt maintained at 566 to 621°C (1050 to 1150°F), hold at temperature for 2 minutes ± 0.2 minute, and cool in air to room temperature.
Stress relieve by heating to 149°C ± 8°C (300°F ± 15°F), holding at temperature for 60 minutes ± 5 minutes, and cooling in air to room temperature.
Subzero cool to -73°C ± 6°C (-100°F ± 10°F), hold at temperature for not less than 15 minutes, and allow to return to room temperature in air.
Temper within 4 hours after the subzero cool by heating to 524°C ± 8°C (975°F ± 15°F), holding at heat for 2 hours ± 0.25 hour, and cooling in air to room temperature.
