SAE 5353 Heat Treatments
- Normalized, Sub-Zero Cooled and Tempered (Intermediate Heat Treat Condition)
Heat at 1024°C ± 14°C (1875°F ± 25°F), hold at heat for not less than 60 min. per 25 mm of maximum cross-section and not less than 30 min less than 25 mm of maximum cross-section. Cool at a rate equivalent to air cool. Subzero cool at -67°C or below (-90°F or below), hold for not less than 60 min. Warm in air to room temperature. Temper at 607°C ± 14°C (1125°F ± 26°F), hold 2 to 4 hours. Cool to room temperature.
Hardened, Sub-Zero Cooled and Double Tempered (Final Heat Treat Condition)
Heat at 1010°C ± 14°C (1850°F ± 25°F), hold at heat for not less than 60 min. per 25 mm of maximum cross-section and not less than 30 min less than 25 mm of maximum cross-section. Quench in oil. Subzero cool at -67°C or below (-90°F or below), hold for not less than 60 min. Warm in air to room temperature. Temper at 316 to 371°C (600 to 700°F), hold 2 hours ± 0.25 hours. Cool to room temperature. Subzero cool at -67°C or below (-90°F or below), hold for not less than 60 min. Warm in air to room temperature. Re-temper at 316 to 371°C (600 to 700°F), hold 2 hours ± 0.25 hour. Cool to room temperature.
Sub-zero cooling and tempering before hardening may be omitted if approved by purchaser.
