SAE 5337 Heat Treatments

  • Production Castings and Specimens:

    Homogenized, Overaged, Solution heat treated and Maraged:
    Homogenization: Heat to 1149 ± 14°C (2100 ± 25°F), hold at heat for 4 ± 0.25 hour, and cool to room temperature at a rate equivalent to air cool or faster;
    Overaging: Heat to 593 ± 14°C (1100 ± 25°F), hold at heat for 1 to 4 hours, and cool to room temperature at a rate equivalent to air cool or faster. Alternately, heat to the solution heat treating temperature directly after overaging without cooling between steps;
    Solution heat treated: Heat to 816 ± 14°C (1500 ± 25°F), hold at heat for 1 hour per 25 mm of section thickness but in no case less than 1 hour, and cool to room temperature at a rate equivalent to air cool or faster;
    Maraged: Heat to 482 ± 8°C (900 ± 15°F), hold at heat for 3 ± 0.25 hours, and cool to room temperature at a rate equivalent to air cool or faster
