SAE 17-22-A S Heat Treatments
- Heated to 954°C ± 14 (1750°F ± 25), held at heat for 60 to 90 minutes, and cooled at a rate equivalent to still air cooling, and reheated to 593 ± 8°C (1100°F ± 15), held at heat for 6 hours ± 0.25, and cooled in air, shall have hardness at the center of the test specimen not lower than 331 HB or equivalent for sections 51 mm and under, and not lower than 302 HB or equivalent for up to 102 mm sections.
- Normalizing and tempering: Heated to 954 ± 8°C (1750 ± 15°F), holding at heat for not less than 6 minutes per 2.5 mm of nominal thickness, and cooling at a rate equivalent to air cooling, and tempered by heating to 593 ± 6°C (1100 ± 10°F), holding at heat for not less than 6 hours, and cooling in air.
Elevated temperature properties were obtained after heating the specimen to 538 ± 6°C (1000 ± 10°F), holding at heat for 20 - 30 minutes before testing, and testing at 538 ± 6°C (1000 ± 10°F) at a rate of 0.045 - 0.062 mm/mm/min up to the yield strength and 0.1 - 0.2 mm/mm/min thereafter.
