SS 2737 Heat Treatments
- Full annealing: Normally 850°C, time at temperature, approx. 2 h with protection against decarburization and oxidation. Cooling time 10 K/h (10°C/h) to approx. 650°C, then cooling in air.
Stress-relief annealing: Normally 650°C, time at temperature, approx. 2 h. Cooling in the furnace to approx. 500°C, then cooling in air (with subsequent checking of dimensions, straightening and final machining).
Hardening: Preheating, usually in two steps, normally first to 550°C in a convection furnace, then to 850°C in a salt bath.
Austenitizing for cutting tools, normally 1225°C in a salt bath.
Austenitizing for shearing and shaping tools, 1150-1225°C in a salt bath.
Cooling normally to approx. 550°C in a salt bath, then cooling in air (possibly cooling in oil) to approx. 50°C.
Hardening may be carried out in a vacuum furnace if absolute maximum hardness is not aimed at.
Tempering: Tempering normally in a convection furnace or a salt bath at 560°C, time at temperature 1 h, three times with an intermediate cooling in air to room temperature.
