SS 21 40 Heat Treatments
- Soft annealed: 760°C, holding time approx. 2 hours after heating. The steel is protected against decarburization and oxidation. Cooling 15°C / h to approx. 600°C, then free cooling in air.
Relaxation annealing: 550 - 650°C, holding time approx. 2 hours after heating. Cool in the oven to about 500°C, then free cooling in air.
Hardening: Preheating to 500 - 700°C. Curing temperature 790 - 830°C, normally 810°C. Cooling in oil or stage bath. Tempering immediately after cooling to approx. 50°C. The surface hardness achieved after curing depends on the dimension and coolant.
Tempering: The temperature is selected with regard to the desired hardness. Tempering twice with intermediate cooling to room temperature is recommended. The effect of time on the hardness at low tempering temperatures, around 200°C, is relatively small, but increases with rising temperature.
