SS 19 12 Heat Treatments
- Carburization in powder: a) Carburizing temperature 880 - 920°C, Direct cooling in water or oil.
b) Carburization temperature 880 - 920°C. The temperature is allowed to drop to 800°C, thereafter cooling in water
c) Carburization temperature 880 - 920°C. Cooling to room temperature or below 650°C. Reheat to 770 - 820°C, then cool in water.
Carburization in gas
a) Carburizing temperature 900°C. Cooling to 800°C, then cooling in water
b) Carburizing temperature 900°C. Cooling in oil. New heating to 800°C and cooling in water.
c) Carburizing temperature 850 - 900°C. Direct cooling in oil. Carbon nitration (additive) of ammonia in the gas) is used in this process.
d) When very small carbonization depths are desired, carbon nitration is performed at 760 - 800°C with direct cooling in oil.
Carburization in salt: Carburizing temperature 850 - 920°C. Direct cooling in water or oil. Tempering usually does not need to be done after set hardening. If tempering is performed, this takes place at 150 - 200°C. Holding time 1 hour after full heating. Free cooling.
