EN 10028-6: 2017 / Flat products made of steels for pressure purposes - Part 6: Weldable fine grain steels, quenched and tempered
Heat Treatments
- Quenched and tempered: 860-940°C, cooled in oil, polymer or water. Tempered at 600-700°C.
- Quenching and tempering:
Hardening at 860-940°C, after the temperature has been reached, quench the entire cross-section in water or oil, or cool in air.
Tempering at 560-700°C, holding time at least 30 min, cool down in still air.

Normal annealing 880-960°C, after reaching the temperature, cool the entire cross-section in still air.

Three stage heat treatment:
Hardening at 860-940°C / water
750-780°C / water
Tempering at 600-630°C.

Heat treatment after welding:
Stress relief annealing at 530-580°C. Cooling down in still air or in the oven. The duration required for the specified annealing temperatures includes this warming up and keeping within the temperature range and depends on the thickness of the components. When measuring for the annealing temperature on the component surface, depending on the thickness, the following guide values are recommended:
≤ 15 mm at least 15 min
> 15 mm to ≤ 30 mm at least 30 min
> 30 mm to ≤ 350 mm at least 60 min
> 350 mm approx. 120 min.
The maximum holding time for the usual stress relief annealing is 150 minutes. With a holding time > 90 min or with multiple anneals, the lower limit of the temperature range should be aimed for.
