DIN 1.3333 Heat Treatments

  • Soft annealing: Heated slowly at 770-840°C (the upper limit of this temperature range applies to higher alloyed, and the lower limit for lower alloyed high speed steels), held for 2 to 4 hours, slowly cooled in the furnace to 500-600°C, removed from the furnace and placed in a protected place.

Hardening: Heated at 1180-1220°C. The temperature of the hot bath should be 500-550°C and must not exceed 580°C during extended use.
When cooling in oil, at about 40-70°C, the samples should be moved slowly and evenly and should not be left in oil until completely cooled, but when they reach 300-200°C.

Tempering: Heated slowly at 520-550°C, held for 1 to 3 hours, depending on the size of the samples. The tempering takes place in a neutral salt bath or in an air circulation furnace.
  • Austenitized at 1190 ± 10°C and quenched. Usual quenching media in practice are air, gas or salt bath. Total heating time of test pieces in a salt bath is 3 min. for hardening and minimum 2 periods of 60 min. each for tempering.
    Tempered at 560 ± 10°C.
