CSN 19 830 Heat Treatments

  • Forging at 1100 to 900°C, slowly cooling, eg in dry ash or oven.
Soft annealing at 800 to 840°C, 4 to 8 hours to warm up and slowly cool in the oven.
Annealing to reduce stress at 700 to 750°C, 1 to 2 hours to warm up and slowly cool in the oven.
    Hardening:
    a) at 1220 to 1250°C, for rough-form roughing tools.
    b) at 1190 to 1220°C, for sophisticated tools, fine edge tools, finishing tools.
Cooling in a salt bath at a temperature of 500 to 550°C or in oil, in air or in the air stream.
    Tempering:
    a) at 550 to 560°C, at least twice for 1/2 to 2 hours.
    b) at 540 to 550°C, the last tempering temperature is selected by about 10°C lower than at the first tempering. After tempering, cool in the air. For possible nitriding, a temperature of about 10 to 20°C is chosen to be lower than the last tempering temperature.
