CSN 19 356 Heat Treatments
- Forging at 1000 to 800°C slowly cooling in still air or better, for example, in dry ash.
Normalizing at 790 to 810°C, cooling in air.
Soft annealing at 680 to 710°C, several hours of warming (by piece size), usually 4 hours and slowly cooling in the oven.
Annealing to reduce stress at 600 to 650°C, 1 to 2 hours to warm up and slowly cool in the oven.
Hardening in water at 760 to 780°C, small and complex objects (up to about 40 mm thick) or for large and simple objects at 770 to 800°C. In oil at 800 to 820°C for thin cross-sections of thickness below 4 mm.
Tempering at 100 to 300°C, cooling in air or water, the degree of tempering is governed by the required hardness and toughness of the tool.
