CSN 19 191 Heat Treatments

  • Forging at 1000 to 800°C, slowly cooling in still air or better, for example, in dry ash.
Normalization at 790 to 810°C, cooling in air.
Soft annealing at 680 to 710°C, heating for several hours (by piece size), usually 4 hours and slowly cooling in the oven.
Annealing to reduce stress at 600 to 650°C, 1 to 2 hours to warm up and slowly cool in the oven.
    Hardening:
    a) in water at 750 to 770°C, smaller and formally complex objects.
    b) in water at 760 to 790°C, large and simple-looking objects.
Larger objects can be varnished by means of a wing, shaped more complex objects prone to calving cracks polished. c) in oil at 790 to 820°C, thin objects under 3 mm. After hardening in the oil, the cross-sectional area of the oil that is drilled reaches a hardness of about 62 HRC. Cross sections thicker than 3 mm when hardened into oil have a turbid layer irregular and are softer on the surface
    Tempering:
at 100 to 250°C, cool in the air or in the water. The degree of tempering is governed by the required hardness and toughness of the tool.
