Surface Fatigue Life of High Temperature Gear Materials / D. P. Townsend / National Aeronautics and Space Administration / 1994 / ARL-TR-401
Heat Treatments
- 1.Harden after rough machining by austenitizing at 1109°C (2030°F) for 15 min, quench in salt bath at 607°C (1125 °F) and air cool to room temperature.
2. Triple temper (2 + 2 + 2 hr) at 547°C (1015°F) as soon as the steel cools to 52°C (125°F) from the quench. To minimize thermal shock, the steel shall be introduced into a cool tempering furnace, then advanced slowly to the tempering temperature. Hardness after tempering shall be Rockwell C 61 to 63.
3. Finish grind.
