SAE 17-4PH Heat Treatments

  • Bars, wire, forgings, mechanical tubing, and flash welded rings shall be solution heat treated by heating to 1038 ± 14°C (1900 ± 25°F), holding at heat for a time commensurate with section thickness, heating equipment, and procedure used and cooling as required to below 32°C (90°F).
Flash welded rings may be given a homogenization heat treatment prior to solution heat treatment when permitted by purchaser. When such treatment is permitted, the rings shall be heated to 1149 ± 14°C (2100 ± 25°F), held at heat for not less than 90 minutes, and cooled at a rate equivalent to, or faster than, an air cool.
    Precipitation Heat Treatment:
    H900: 482 ± 6°C (900 ± 10°F), 1 hour +15/-0 minutes.
    H925: 496 ± 6°C (925 ± 10°F), 4 hours +30/-0 minutes.
    H1025: 552 ± 6°C (1025 ± 10°F), 4 hours +30/-0 minutes.
    H1075: 579 ± 6°C (1075 ± 10°F), 4 hours +30/-0 minutes.
    H1100: 593 ± 6°C (1100 ± 10°F), 4 hours +30/-0 minutes.
    H1150: 621 ± 6°C (1150 ± 10°F), 4 hours +30/-0 minutes.
  • Homogenization: Heat to 1149°C ± 14°C (2100°F ± 25), not less than 90 minutes, cool as required to room temperature.
Solution heat treated: Heat to 1038°C ± 14°C (1900°F ± 25), for 1 hour per 25 mm of section thickness but not less than 30 minutes, cool as required to below 21°C (70°F).
Precipitation: Heat within the range 529 - 546°C (985 - 1015°F), hold at the selected temperature within ± 6°C (± 10°F), for not less than 90 minutes, cool in air or inert gas to room temperature.
